Business Banks in Bulgaria: A Practical Comparison for Foreign Founders
There is no universally best Bulgarian bank. The right starting point depends on who owns and manages your company, where you live, how the business will receive and spend money, whether you need cash or card acceptance, and whether you can visit Bulgaria. This comparison uses official bank information and clearly separates public facts from StartinBG's practical experience.
StartinBG is not a bank or financial adviser. Each bank independently decides on acceptance, documents, fees and processing time.

The Bulgarian bank market at a glance
Every institution listed here is a bank licensed by the Bulgarian National Bank. The grouping describes public product positioning – it does not mean one category is easier for foreign shareholders or more likely to approve an application.
Large universal banks
Broad business-banking propositions with accounts, cards, transfers, branch networks and additional services. Digital capabilities and onboarding conditions are not identical.
UniCredit Bulbank · United Bulgarian Bank (UBB) · DSK Bank · Postbank (Eurobank Bulgaria) · Fibank (First Investment Bank)
SME- and digitally oriented banks
Publish online applications, clear documentation lists or remote channels, and target small and medium-sized businesses specifically.
ProCredit Bank Bulgaria · BACB (Bulgarian-American Credit Bank)
Relationship-led and specialist alternatives
Relevant where a founder values relationship banking, cards, financing or a broader financial-services relationship. Confirm foreign-founder conditions directly.
Allianz Bank Bulgaria · Central Cooperative Bank · International Asset Bank · Bulgarian Development Bank · Municipal Bank · Texim Bank · TBI Bank · D Commerce Bank (D Bank) · Investbank · Tokuda Bank
The inclusion of a bank in this comparison is not an endorsement and says nothing about approval likelihood.

Comparison of Bulgarian banks by publicly documented business-account features
“Publicly confirmed” means the bank states this on its own official pages. It does not mean every company – especially one with foreign shareholders – will actually receive the service. An online form does not necessarily mean that a foreign director can open the account without visiting Bulgaria.

What each bank publicly offers – and the critical qualification
Short profiles of the compared banks: the publicly documented digital capability on the left, and the qualification you must clarify before applying on the right.
UniCredit Bulbank
Large universal bank
Publicly documented digital capability
Publicly advertises remote company-account onboarding, online banking, business packages and POS services.
Critical qualification
The published remote process is limited to Bulgarian legal entities whose sole legal representative is a Bulgarian citizen acting independently; a qualified electronic signature (QES) is required. Foreign directors should not assume eligibility.
United Bulgarian Bank (UBB)
Large universal bank
Publicly documented digital capability
Provides a digital portal, QES-signed applications, online banking and video consultation.
Critical qualification
The digital portal is described for existing UBB business clients. It should not be presented as proof that a foreign founder can complete initial onboarding remotely.
DSK Bank
Large universal bank
Publicly documented digital capability
Provides business online and mobile banking; DSK Direct supports online applications for account-related services.
Critical qualification
Public information reviewed does not establish universal fully remote onboarding for a newly formed foreign-managed company.
Postbank (Eurobank Bulgaria)
Large universal bank
Publicly documented digital capability
Publishes SME packages incorporating current accounts, internet banking and business cards.
Critical qualification
Packages and tariffs change. Link to the current official tariff rather than reproducing fees without an update process.
Fibank (First Investment Bank)
Large universal bank
Publicly documented digital capability
Offers business accounts in several currencies, business packages, cards, virtual banking and SEPA instant transfers.
Critical qualification
Its public fully digital onboarding information found during this review related primarily to personal clients; business eligibility must be confirmed directly.
ProCredit Bank Bulgaria
SME- & digitally oriented
Publicly documented digital capability
Publicly offers an online business-account application, business cards, international transfers, POS terminals and business financing.
Critical qualification
The online application should not be described as guaranteed fully remote approval for every foreign-owned company. Eligibility must be confirmed with the bank. Cash services run mainly through self-service zones.
BACB (Bulgarian-American Credit Bank)
SME- & digitally oriented
Publicly documented digital capability
Publishes business current accounts, remote-banking channels and account-opening documentation.
Critical qualification
Published standard documentation includes company records, bylaws, beneficial-owner information and identification documents. Additional documentation can apply to certain foreign structures.
Allianz Bank Bulgaria
Relationship-led alternative
Publicly documented digital capability
Publishes business online banking and business cards with configurable employee access and limits.
Critical qualification
Initial remote onboarding and foreign-founder eligibility were not clearly established from the reviewed public information.
Which type of bank should you investigate first?
Four common starting points – and what to compare in each case. None of this replaces the bank's own assessment.
You need a traditional Bulgarian bank and can visit Bulgaria
Start with the large universal banks and compare:
branch accessibility where you'll operate
English-language support
account packages and what they include
online banking features
your expected transaction profile
You want a fully remote process
“Online application”, “remote service” and “fully remote onboarding for a foreign director” are not the same thing. UniCredit's current public remote-opening process shows why this distinction matters: although it advertises remote onboarding, its published eligibility is restricted to a Bulgarian legal entity represented independently by a Bulgarian citizen. So check:
initial remote onboarding – publicly confirmed, or just a contact form?
explicitly stated foreign-director eligibility
QES requirements
power-of-attorney acceptance
whether a branch visit becomes necessary after all
Your company expects to seek financing
Then more than the current account matters. Compare:
SME lending offer
relationship-manager access
operating-history requirements
typical collateral expectations
whether the bank should become your primary operational bank
You mainly need international collections and payments
Compare Bulgarian banks separately from fintechs and electronic-money institutions – see the section below. For banks, look at:
SEPA and SWIFT conditions
available account currencies
instant transfers
English-language online banking
Bank, EMI or payment platform?
Revolut, Wise, Paysera and similar services are not Bulgarian banks, even though they are often mentioned in the same breath. Their suitability for capital deposit, tax payments, local administration and daily operations must be evaluated separately. Many founders end up combining both: a Bulgarian bank for capital, taxes and authorities – and a platform for specific international payments.
Fees: why there is no price table here
Account fees, package prices and transfer costs change constantly – banks publish new tariffs with their own effective dates. A copied fee table would quickly go stale and become misleading. Instead of a “cheapest bank” calculator, we link directly to each bank's official pages, where the currently valid tariff is available. Compare the standard actions that matter to you there: account opening, monthly account fee, online SEPA transfer, business debit card, cash deposit, cash withdrawal and international transfer.
Information supported by the Bulgarian National Bank, the bank's own product pages, official tariffs or official terms and conditions. Only such information appears in the comparison table.
StartinBG practical note
Observations from cases we have actually supported: typical communication experience, documents commonly requested, whether English communication was available, whether additional branch visits were requested, and common causes of delay. We share these in consultations – and only where we have direct, recent and documented experience.
Practical experience reflects individual cases and does not guarantee the same treatment for another applicant.
All banks licensed in Bulgaria
Complete directory of banks licensed by the BNB. Branches of foreign banks operating under an EU passport are not listed here – they appear in the BNB register.
StartinBG is not a bank or financial adviser. We provide practical information and formation support. Each bank independently determines its onboarding requirements, risk assessment, fees, processing time and approval decision.
Information is checked periodically but can change without notice. Confirm all conditions directly with the bank before making a decision.
Have two or three banks in mind? Let us help you prepare
Tell us who owns and manages the company, where you live, what the business will do and how the account will be used. We will help you narrow down realistic institutions, prepare the documentation and coordinate the next steps – the decision always rests with the bank.
We won't ask you to pick “the best bank” – just which institutions you are currently considering.
Frequently asked questions about business banking in Bulgaria
Short answers to the banking questions we hear most often.
Can a foreign founder open a Bulgarian business account fully remotely?+
There is no blanket yes. Some banks advertise online applications or remote processes, but the published conditions are often limited to Bulgarian citizens or existing clients. Whether a fully remote flow works for your setup is decided by each bank after its own review – in practice at least one appointment or a power-of-attorney arrangement is often needed.
Which account do I need for depositing the share capital?+
For incorporation, a capital accumulation account is opened at a bank in Bulgaria and the share capital is paid into it. After registration it is converted into a regular business account or the balance is transferred to one. Not every platform qualifies – electronic-money institutions generally do not fulfil this function.
Are Revolut, Wise or Paysera an alternative to a Bulgarian bank?+
They can complement specific international payments, but they are not Bulgarian banks. For capital deposit, tax payments and local administration you must evaluate their suitability separately. Many companies use a combination of a bank and a platform.
Which documents do banks usually require?+
Typically a commercial-register extract, the company's articles or bylaws, beneficial-owner information, identification documents of the representatives, and a description of the business activity with the expected transaction profile. Foreign structures can trigger additional, sometimes translated and certified, documentation.
Does StartinBG guarantee that a bank will open my account?+
No – and be sceptical of any provider that promises this. Acceptance, fees and conditions are entirely controlled by the bank. We help you understand the market, approach sensible institutions and submit a better-prepared application.
How current is the information on this page?+
Every row carries a “last checked” date. The bank list is checked against the BNB register and the comparison entries against the banks' official pages. Conditions can still change at any time – before deciding, rely only on the bank's own confirmation.
In a free initial consultation we assess your situation: which institutions could fit your profile, which documents to prepare, and which expectations are realistic.
